What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a common eye disease that can lead to vision loss or blindness — if not treated properly and early. Intraocular pressure (IOP) builds within the eye, which can damage the optic nerve.
Most symptoms won’t appear until irreversible vision loss has occurred, including blind spots, halos around lights, eye pain, redness, and headaches. If you’re over 60; black, Asian, or Hispanic; have a family history of glaucoma; or have certain medical conditions, you’re at higher risk.
What Causes Glaucoma?
Glaucoma results from abnormally high IOP, which can be caused by excessive fluid production, poor drainage, eye trauma, and certain medications. Increased IOP can damage the optic nerve, which sends what you see to your brain. There is no “cure” for glaucoma — but our highly trained doctors can slow or stop its progression with the help of our advanced equipment and treatment options.
