Myopia can interfere with your child’s development and even eye health. That’s why Standard Optical offers myopia management: a specialized way to keep nearsightedness in check!

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive condition where your cornea — the front of your eye, which helps to focus your vision — is too long. This makes it harder for your eye to focus on faraway objects, which makes them blurry. Myopia can be caused by everything from genetics to lifestyle, such as lack of time outdoors or overexposure to blue light from computer screens.

Standard eyewear can correct nearsightedness, but if the eye length isn’t treated, myopia will only progress. This can lead to stronger prescriptions and greater risk for eye disease down the line.

What to watch for as a parent

Myopia Isn’t Always Obvious. But There Are Commons Signs:

Your child may not know they’re nearsighted, and you won’t be able to tell by looking at them. But you may notice your child struggling in school, not enjoying extracurricular or social activities, having frequent headaches, and rubbing their eyes or squinting. Most parents wouldn’t assume these all come from the same cause, but they’re all symptoms of myopia.

Kids don’t know what clear vision is until it’s shown to them — but with an eye exam, we can catch nearsightedness and get on top of it right away.

Are You or Your Child:

Limit the Progression of Myopia

MiSight® 1 day Soft Lenses

These FDA-approved contact lenses from CooperVision are an innovative answer for curbing the development of myopia in older children. These disposable daily contacts have distinct areas in the lens to both improve eyesight now, and to reduce eye strain — a leading cause of severe myopia.

Ortho-K Overnight Lenses

These specialty lenses are distinct from other contacts in two main ways. One, they are worn overnight, meaning you don’t have to rely on eyewear as much during the day! Two, they actually gently reshape the eye while you sleep, which keeps your vision clear the next day and helps prevent the eye from becoming significantly longer over time.

Specialty Multifocal Lenses

In addition to these dedicated myopia management solutions, some people find greater success with other specialty options like standard multifocal lenses, which work similarly to MiSight®. It really depends on the individual! We’ll help you find the best solution during your myopia management consultation, and adapt your care as we go.
